Is it true? Is there a real Mexican place In Tel-Aviv? I was so excited when I heard about “Mezcal” I had to check it out for myself. So we went for a fun night out with some good friends to eat, drink and catch up, and we loved this place. The vibe is right and the food is excellent and reasonably priced. What more can you ask for? A parking lot, Shir and Ishay, our guests from Jerusalem would say, but you know what, we found parking to the south of Florentine, so it’s perfect! See for yourself, personally these pictures make me drool.

The place is small and packed, a Florentine neighborhood feeling. We sat by the table at the window which was a bit too small for the five of us. I wish we had the big table but it was taken. Small place, did I mention?

The menu is the individual table papers. Diner style but not too shabby. Prices of 24 – 54 NIS giving a very good value for the money.

Ishay had the courage to try it. We all tasted and it was authentic and interesting but he wasn’t as happy with it as the owner of the place hoped so he returned it gladly and we ordered some normal draft beers instead.

Fajitas: colorful peppers, onions, corn, sauteed with strips of sirloin (54 NIS). Was my least favorite dish of the night.

Came with tortillas, salsa and guacamole on the side. We also ordered extra guacamole (8 NIS). The dips and tortillas were great.

Enchilada Verde: four rolled corn tortillas filled with chicken, hot green salsa, shredded cheese, sour cream, onion and cilantro (46 NIS)

This was one of my favorite dishes. The green salsa was dominant and so good. I loved this combination. Excellent.

Ceviche Tostadas: two flat crispy corn tortillas with fish ceviche marinated in lemon, tomato, onion and chopped cilantro and chipotle sauce (34 NIS).

I liked the dish, the seasoning and the flavors but it was a mess to eat. Maybe the version without the tostadas was easier to eat.

Warm and crispy handmade nachos with classic salsa of tomatoes and jalapeño (24 NIS). Was great to get homemade nachos, they tasted homemade and not too greasy or oily like they tend to be. It’s nice sitting in this place with beer and a mutual nachos basket.

Mezcal (a type of Mexican tequila) in a glass with a chili rim and a slice of orange (34 NIS). Omer said: “Cool!”

Quesadilla: two folded wheat flour tortillas toasted on the plancha with melted cheese and frijoles (black bean paste) (24 NIS). These were the perfect little snack. So good.

Tacos: two soft wheat tortillas filled with pineapple chicken (24 NIS). One of the specials of the day that we took because the meat taco was out. I think we would have like better the meat taco but it was nice too. (p.s. bummer to get canned pineapple in a dish, but with the pineapple prices in Israel, no wonder…)

Enchiladas Rojas: four rolled corn tortillas filled with meat, hot chipotle red salsa, shredded cheese, sour cream, onion and cilantro (46 NIS)

The best dish of the night! I loved it! So good. I would go back to the place just to have it again. Spicy and full of goodness.

The bill came up to 388 NIS, with drinks, sharing all dishes. It’s less than 80 NIS per person and we ate a lot!
Another visit on: October 2013
We didn’t feel like trying out the desserts, knowing we’re so close to Anita Ice-Cream, one of the best ice-cream places. We rushed there and even waited patiently in a long queue.

Instead of the usual habit of each one getting his own cone with scopes, we went for two half-a-kilo boxes to share. It was a lot! But a good idea.

One box with the standard flavors: nutella, nuts, chocolates, coffee. It was all the same color by accident.

The other half was all the colorful flavors: pistachio, mint, mint-watermelon, white-chocolate amaretto.
In short
If you like mexican food, spicy food, street food and all these together while sitting in a cool bar – run to Mezcal!
If you like ice-cream, standard flavors or some more exotic ones – run to Anita.
