After the great success of “Eat like a foreigner“, I got a lot of responses asking to do another eating-meeting in Neve-Sha’anan. I was happy to organize it and decided this time we’ll visit the Sudanese Restaurant and then back to the Chinese Restaurant to look for new dishes there (thinking mostly about the duck). Also joined us Erica and her friend Uri, a silent reader to my blog who decided to stop being silent. I was so happy to meet you!
We met at the “First Sudanese Restaurant” in Tel-Aviv, located few stores left from “Shawarma Rosh Hayir” in the corner of Neve Sha’anan and Solomon st.

Most bizarre menu: not only designed in circles but also in three different pages. This is the blue.

And the green, with extra other dishes. What does it say? We have no idea so we asked for 3 things and rice. Unfortunately one of them, the Aseeda, was out. We were disappointed after reading about it in another article which raised our hopes. So we settled (without our knowledge) for Fasolia instead.

Moshakal (25 NIS). Chicken and vegetables in sauce. The sauce, full of spices and great when mixing in some green spicy sauce and squeezed lemon that came on the side.

Kebab Hala (25 NIS), meat in sauce. Different sauce than the last plate. A delight. Here as well I mixed with spicy sauce and lemon.

This time we found a menu but still had troubles ordering some new and exciting dishes. Every dish appeared to double its price for us and we were already so full so we went for some safe choices.

The mandatory “Bao” steamed buns, filled with pork, onion and spices. (7 NIS per piece). This time I asked for vinegar and helped myself from the counter.

The fried noodles dish was the most surprising in my opinion (25 NIS maybe?). The noodles were fresh and so tasty.

For dessert we went to the Filipino food stall and tried a dessert of sticky rice with caramel custard on top (10 NIS). Such a good combination, I loved it.

And also, purple and yellow steamed rice cakes (10 NIS). Soft and moist, just gently sweetened. It’s worth going back just for these desserts.
And of course, never leave Neve Sha’anan without getting the best Tofu in town – Dragon Tofu from the Dragon store just behind the Filipino stall (20 NIS for 500g if I recall).
I strongly recommend once again taking a walk in this neighborhood which is so interesting and different than the rest of the city. And if you’re walking there, sit down and eat something: Ethiopian, Sudanese, Chinese, Filipino, Persian, Romanian … And please bring me a pack of Filipino dessert.
looks better than the African place we went to in Paris… and much closer too…
Looks great – can you tell me the name or location of the Chinese food restaurant? This is definitely a trip I want to make
Hi Andrea,
There’s no name for the place, it’s 24 Neve Sha’anan street.
